Everyone has at least one

Mirrors

The world’s most popular decorating accessory.

What do they do?

They are mystical,

originally created with silver or tin - old mirrors lose their shine  -  but it adds to their mystery.

In 16th century Venice the mercury was added to tin and in 1835 Justus von Liebig discovered the means to mixing molten metal on glass.

Long part of Faerie Lore – the  “Silvers” provide a doorway between two worlds  and it is said that other world creatures show no reflection.

Whatever the truth in Mirror Lore  in decorating the Mirror is Beloved!

Mirrors are reflectors

They expand light and space.  They add drama!   Look at this photo I took on my visit to the Baccarat Museum in Paris.

The secret to mirrors is how they trick us into believing the space is bigger!

Reflecting an outdoor setting or a small room expands our visual horizons

Make sure when you place a mirror that it reflects something attractive.

If you put the mirror to high it often reflects a less than fabulous ceiling.

Mirrors look fabulous in bedrooms  – behind the bed it visually opens the space up and adds  a quality of fantasy.  Be sure to screw said mirror into the wall securely! You don’t want it falling on you on a wild night.

Found this lovely pic in an old Domino mag Nairobi Home of the Marrians – out of Africa  – and into sweet dreams

The fireplace is a popular spot for a mirror. Not usually a place I like to hang a mirror. Much better to place a large mirror across from the fireplace.

I prefer something that catches the eye -a glorious painting or decorative piece – this wonderful room caught my eye with its mixed up ovals

From a South African Elle Decoration Magazine a house in Joberg.  Love the Texture and glam appeal.  Lilac walls look good with the yellow.

Long mirrors standing in rooms create theater, and I dont get tired of the leaning mirror

The wonders of a mirror are endless.  Every room could hold a mirror or a grouping of mirrors.  Dining rooms are a great space for mirrors.  It adds warmth to the room.

Pay attention to restaurant interiors you adore and you will often see mirrors in them. They cleverly slant the mirrors so the diners and their gaiety and sumptuous feasts are reflected over and over. The room is filled with light and the music of happiness.

Mirrors add depth and hide a multitude of sins- small spaces, dark corners,  and reflect and energize.   Bathroom walls look great clad in mirror  – one wall in mirror opens a tiny room.  I recently visited the Clift Hotel in San Francisco and was charmed by the mirrored wall across the tub. It definitely add a sense of luxury and size.

What is your favorite mirror and where is it hanging?
