Halloween colors and decorations are up. Why
not take a simple yet elegant approach. Use a door
decoration that is all shades of brown and
culled from nature. Have the kids help you gather
the goods, Select a theme, nuts leaves &
birds,(made from brown paper stuffing and wire) add
a dash of orange splash, the beaks on the
birds. Paint some old tins brown and plant some
shapely pumpkin birds. Inside continue
the theme, keeping the overall ideas flowing through.
Remember less is more. One big bird on the
table, a group of little birds on a pile of leaves
on the mantle, etc.
You want to suggest the idea, not hit people over
the head with it.

Its trick or treat outside and in.
It is a trick to get all the treats out on the
table, ready for the hungry. Take inspiration from
browns and oranges of the season.
A pot of chili, stew or soup. A simple one dish meal
prepared the day before. Serve with whole-wheat
bread & butter.
Pumpkin bread with caramel ice-cream for dessert
makes a tasty finish. I have a great recipe if you
are interested email me @ jen@homesredefined.com.
Add a cream or orange tablecloth.
Pumpkins of mixed colors & shapes make great table
decorations, add some leaves, and candles to create
a warm glow.

The FAB factor
|
|
|
The basic idea behind redesign is what I call the
FAB factor.
FUNCTION
AFFORDABILITY
BEAUTY
Everything has a function.
If you don’t need it, why keep it?
Space is what it is, unless you can pull it all
apart, you have to determine how to make the space
work well: Optimal Functioning. Place, & use
furniture to optimize those goals. You want the FAB
factor: attractive, meets your budget, you can live
with happily, enjoying the look, the function.
What items need to be good and what items can you
fake it with?
Remember, this is like creating an outfit you can
wear everyday.
You buy a good quality suit: Good couches or art,
quality carpets are worth investing in. If you buy
good bones, and you love the look, you can use the
items for a long time.
Remember need and function must also follow the
beauty factor – in other words pick the most
appealing items you can afford,
Update the look with accessories by changing pillows
& drapes and swapping out collectibles for the
seasons or as color palates change.
You can save money by buying cheaper side chairs or
painting your existing coffee table. Garage sales
or consignment shops also offer bargains. Ready
made curtains or a couple of cans of paint can be
affordable inspiring solutions.
Think function first, test your affordability
factor, and don’t forget the beauty check. Think
FAB Function includes color cohesion, longevity,
size, price (does the use of this item justify the
cost?)
